  1. TOURISM

Tabuk City is proudly dubbed as the “RICE GRANARY OF THE CORDILLERAS & THE WHITE WATER RAFTING CAPITAL IN NORTHERN PHILIPPINES. Indeed, Tourism plays a vital role in the economic growth of a developing City like Tabuk. In fact, tourism is currently one of the major forces driving our City’s progress. For the year 2007, Tabuk City attracted some twenty thousand tourists both local and national. This implies that the people continue to travel despite escalating political conflicts and worldwide economic crisis of the past years. Tourism, it seems, flourishes even in hard times.

Culture and nature sums-up eco-tourism and Tabuk is richly endowed with these assets. It is composed of the environmental resources, the cultural practices and the outdoor sports, which are highlighted by the Chico River White Water Rafting. These destinations are being aggressively promoted in terms of media mileage both in print and broadcast. Local Radio promotions are also being done. With the printing and reproduction of the Tourism Brochures and regular update of the Tabuk City Website and the support of Kalinga Tambayan, our Tourism destinations is now in the top list of Tourists destinations not just locally but internationally.

The economic impact of tourism is globally significant and tourism in Tabuk has been identified as preferred strategy for development planners and policy makers which largely contributed to the economy of the City. The conceptualization of the Urban Plan and the identification of priority Tourism Programs and Projects will be giving the City a direction in the year’s to come.

Not withstanding the need of a permanent Tourism Officer in the City and insufficient budget allocation the implementation and sustainability of these programs, are bright. Considering the presence of Officials recognizing the importance of Tourism, we can see a silver lining.

To sustain our tourism development programs, it requires the informed participation of all relevant stakeholders, as well as strong political leadership to ensure wide participation and consensus building. Achieving sustainable tourism is a continuous process and it requires constant monitoring of impacts, introducing the necessary preventive and/or corrective measures whenever necessary. Sustainable tourism should also maintain a high level of tourist satisfaction and ensure a meaningful experience to the tourists, raising their awareness about sustainability issues and promoting sustainable tourism practices amongst them.

Lot of things has to be done and it is about time everyone concerned must be imbued with the need to maximize the use of all forms of channels to compress the time required for development to take effect in the shortest time possible.
