1. History
Towards the turn of the 19th century, an old man named Tagutao (one name), the grandfather of the old man Ducayag, grandfather f the late Hon. Deputy Governor Camilo Lammawin Sr., related a story about the historical background of Barangay Magnao as handed down to the present generation.
The story says that the Aeta or Negrito people came to a place where they saw a kind of bamboo without seeds or ‘bodo’ of uniform sizes. The Aeta people called that kind of bamboo as “Magnao”. And that’s how the Barangay got its name up to this time.
Magnao was created as a barangay on March 24, 1948.
The first Barangay Lieutenant was the late Matias Kagaed who served forfour (4) years (1948-1952). Then the late Antnio Lawagan served for four years (1952-1956); Barangay Lt. Mateo Gunayon for 4 years (1956-1960); Barangay Lt. Elpidio Hererra for four years (1960-1964). The first Barangay Captain was the late James Magayam who served for four years (1964-1968); Barangay Captain Leonardo Lunang for 4 years (1968-1972). He resigned during the Martial Law years. He was succeeded by Emilio Cagdan who served from 1972-1976, Johnny Sappa for two terms from 1976-1980 until he ran for Vice Mayor but lost. Barangay Captain Angelito took over for one term from 1981 to 1986, Angelito resigned after he was warned by the CPP-NPA. Barangay Captain Maning Abbacan took over in 1981 to finished the term 1981-1997 and he was defeated in the 1997 elections. Barangay Dominador Gamongan was elected and is the incumbent Barangay Chairman.
Magnao is composed of six sitios namely: Magnao Proper, Dinogual, Mananig, Alino to Baguiwong, Bultinao to Liyang, Pinalo and Gumba. It is bounded by Mt. Buyogan to Guiayon Boundary, Ducap, Pinagan, Obob, Ugaga, Mt. Taguimanao, Gaewak, Pingit, Linsoc and back to Mt. Buyogan.
