1. History
Sometime in the late 1920s, some six to seven families led by one Santos Anga-angan left their home in Cervantes, Ilocos Sur in search for better livelihood. They have heard the campaign for interested settlers in a virgin land named Tabuk in the sub-province of Kalinga in Mountain Province. The Mt. Province- Cagayan National Road was just being opened and these early pioneers came on bullcarts drawn by cows. It took them many days before they came which they found to be ideal for settlement.
This group was joined later by some ten families from Pugo, La Union. They first named their settlement CELAU coined from Cervantes and La Union to remind them of the places they came from. This was later changed to Cabaritan because the little nearby forest abounded with “barit” a certain rattan variety. Cabaritan in Iloko means a place abounding with “barit”.
Before 1968, Cabaritan was shared by Barangays Tuga and Gobgob. The northern half of the area belonged to Tuga while the southern half belonged to Gobgob. In November 1968, a majority of the registered voters in the area signed a petition requesting that Cabaritan be created as a regular barrio. The petition was favorably indorsed by the Municipal Council of Tabuk to the Provincial Board of Kalinga- Apayao for appropriate action. On December 19, 1968 the Provincial Board adopted Resolution No. 840 creating Barrio Cabaritan. Appointed Barrio Captain was Federico Ang- angan. On May 8, 1969, a special election was held for the purpose of electing the regular barrio officials. Federico Ang- angan was duly elected Barrio Captain and served up to the year 1986.
