I. History
Barangay Agbannawag was formerly named Barugbug, a sitio of Barangay Laya. The first settlers were Ilocanos from Burgos, Pangasinan who went to visit Kapitan Baac, the legendary Kalinga Tribal Chief of Laya, Tabuk to ask permission to settle at a place which they called Barugbug, an area which borders Tabuk with Cagayan and Isabela on the East and Mt. Province on the South.
With Kapitan Baac’s permission and blessing, the settlers established their settlement in Barugbug. Subsequently, another group of settler came to Burugbug and these were the Bago Tribes from the hinter lands of Ilocos Sur. Other group were from Calaccad but later went back home because of malaria scourge. There were Ilocanos, too, who started their settlement but malaria epidemic forced them to withdraw to Bulanao and Dagupan. Many of the early settlers died in Barugbug.
Sometimes in 1940, an Ilocano old man suggested that Barugbug be changed to “Agbannawag”, the Ilocano word for “New Rays of Hope“, inspired by the rays of the sun that rise from the mountain in the East. By consensus, the newly established settlement area was named and later was registered as Barrio Agbannawag in the ranks f the Provincial Government at Bontoc, Mt. Province.
Agbannawag lies on the Southeastern portion of the municipality of Tabuk. It is the gateway to Kainga Province from Isabela. It is even a short-cut route Tabuk to Manila through Isabela and Nueva Vizcaya.
In 1953, Barangay Agbannawag was separated from Laya, the mother Barangay of Agbannawag at that time.
