1. History
Barangay Suyang was born of Barangay Amlao by virtue of Provincial Board Resolution No. 07, dated January 7, 1972, of Kalinga- Apayao province which approved Municipal Council Resolution No. 36, series of 1971, of the Municipality of Tabuk. The new local government unit comprises Sitio Bangad, Calyano, Piyas and Suyang, all of mother Barrio Amlao.
Tabuk Municipal Council Resolution No.36, series of 1971 was forwarded to the Provincial Board of Kalinga-Apayao for action it could not be acted upon by said Provincial Board immediately in the year 1971 being an election year. So it was only in January 7, 1972 when the new Provincial Board met that the matter was presented for deliberation and approval thru Provincial Board Resolution No. 07, series of 1972. Said Provincial Board Resolution was ratified by voters in the area covered on April 3, 1972 after which the first set of Barrio Officials were appointed by then Provincial Governor Rolando T. Puzon, in accordance with Republic Act No. 3590, otherwise known as the Barrio Charter.
The first people to settle in the area were led by the late Juan Mangawit, former Catechist turned Public School Teacher for the west side of the Chico River. These were of the Dallac Sub-tribe of Kalinga. After World War 11, other families of the same Sub-tribe followed.
The second group of settlers came from the Western part of the Municipal District of Tanudan who were driven from their mountain homes by famine caused by rat infestation of their kaingin in the late 1940s. These were of the Biga Sub-tribe.
Notable about these two Kalinga Sub-tribes that came to settle in the area is the peaceful and friendly attitude they had with one another. There never was any misunderstanding or hostility that cropped up between them. Rather, they shared together the bounty of the area, coordinating their efforts in undertaking community development projects like, digging the first irrigation canal that watered their rice fields.
The passage of time brought intermarriages between members of the Dallac Sub-tribe and the Biga Sub-tribe which forged closer understanding and harmony among themselves. May such unity and harmonious co-existence be emulated by the other Kalinga Sub-tribes, peace may reign in this province.
