NAMBUCAYAN

. Posted in Barangay Profiles

1.     History

Legends says that, long ago, a group of unidentified persons from another tribe attacked this place and the inhabitants were “nabukal” a term in Kalinga meaning “scattered with much fear”. After this dispersal, they regrouped again then named the place NAMBUCAYAN. The Chieftain named Gawwon was chosen together with his headhunters called “Mengol” and they attacked Dao-angan and some other neighboring tribes to challenge their heroes.  This Gawwon was victoriousand by killing 76 enemy heroes; he was hailed as the greatest hero of Nambucayan. Since then, there were no more fighting and attack from other tribes due to their fear of Gawwon.

Gawwon has two sons, Nga-ngal and Sangdaan and one daughter, Bagoyan. Nga-ngal had only one daughter Ayunao who married Leon Gunaban, Sangdaan had children, Andres Sangdaan being the eldest, and Bagoyan also had children, Johnny Sappa being the eldest. And thus, the family were scattered.

During the Japanese era, Leon Gunaban was seen waking with “baston” and the Japanese taught he was “Datu” thus appointing him Tenyente del Barrio, thereby making him the first Barangay Chief Executive.
