GOBGOB

. Posted in Barangay Profiles

1.     History

Told by older folks, the area coverage of Barangay Gobgob was from Calanan in the South to Masablang in the North, with the total land area of more than 27,000 hectares. The early inhabitants made up the Gobgob Sub-tribe numbering 26 households or families.

The word Gobgob is a Kallinga term meaning “unconquered”. Such was the Kalinga Sub-tribe called because they remained unconquered by other Sub-tribes who at several times tried to raid their settlement to fight them. This was the first stopover of the pioneer settlers coming from the lowland provinces, so that the Municipality of Tabuk was first popularly known to people in the lowlands as “Gobgob”. The land area of Gobgob was greatly reduced upon the creation of Barangay Cabaritan in the North in 1968, and that of Barangay New Tanglag in the South in 1987. Today there are some 274 households with about 3,000 populations made up of Gobgob Sub-tribe, Ilocano, Cagayano, Tagalog and other Kalinga Sub-tribes peacefully with one another.
