. Posted in Barangay Profiles

1.     History

Barangay Bantay was once territory of the Naneng Sub-tribe who utilized the area as a communal pastureland where they turned loose their carabaos after farming season. The place abounded with wild games which provided the people with meat, the owners of the carabaos built a hut in the area to house the anima caretakers whom they called “bantay” or watchmen.

The first settlers in the area were recruited by the American Governor of the former Mountain Province from Samoki, Bontoc, and Mt. Province. For this season the settlement was called Bontoc Colony. However, with the passage of time, population of the place grew as people from other places came to settle in the areas; the name first given by the Naneng Sub-tribe which is “Bantay” was maintained.

From 1961 to 1966, Bantay was a sitio of Barangay Balawag, but in 1967 it was a sitio of Barangay Lucog. In 1968, the elders of the area led by Former Municipal Mayor Agustin Castro, former Councilor Vicente Sal-ao and Jose Odan petitioned for the creation of Bantay as a separate, distinct and independent local government unit. The petition was favorably indorsed by the Municipal Council to the Provincial Board of Kalinga-Apayao. On December 19, 1968 the Provincial Board adopted Resolution No. 843 creating Barangay Bantay. On January 27, 1969 the Provincial Governor Amado B. Almazan issued Administrative Order No. 3 directing the election of the first set of Barangay Officials of the new Barangay on February 2, 1969.

The first elected Barangay Captain was Jose Odan who served for two terms. He was succeeded by Marquez Sal-ao he ran for the Office of Municipal Cuncilor of Tabuk. His unfinished term was continued by Julio Palangdao. After Julio Palangdao, Mr. Amado Baddongon, Julio Palangdao was elected as Barangay Captain. In the recent Barangay Elections, Mr. Hector Dayagon won over Julio Palangdao who is now the Barangay Chairman.
