TABUK CITY – As of February 15, 2010, the rice and corn production losses of the province from the prolonged drought brought about by the El Niño phenomenon has reached P81M.

P73.4M was incurred by corn farmers while the balance was inflicted on rice farmers in Upper Kalinga who rely on communal irrigation systems and water pumps.

The minimal production losses for rice is due to the fact that the Tabuk Valley which is hailed as the “Rice Granary of the Cordillera” is not yet feeling the wrath of the El Niño. As of this time, there is still enough water from the Chico River for its irrigation requirements.

Ignacio Dinulong, GMA Corn Program Coordinator of the Kalinga, is worried the worst is yet to come if as feared the El Niño phenomenon will last until the middle of the year.

By Estanislao Albano Jr.

TABUK CITY, Kalinga – In the wake of the decision of the House of Representatives Electoral Tribunal (HRET) dismissing the electoral protest of James Bejarin against Congressman Manuel Agyao, the two traded serious accusations of cheating.

“According to the decision, he (Agyao) won by 790 votes which is 600 votes less than his edge over me when he was proclaimed. This means he cheated in 2007 and if he cheated then, it is also possible that he also cheated in the protest,” Bejarin, the lone challenger of Agyao in the coming polls, told the media.

Agyao responded saying that as a neophyte politician, he does not know anything about cheating in elections which, according to him, cannot be said of the Bejarin camp.
