Tabuk City, Kalinga (10 July) -- Kalinga Police Provincial Director Virgilio Laya said that the shooting of Jose "Pepe" Daguio, 72, here is not a media killing incident. According to Laya, the first consideration is that Daguio is no longer active as a media man since he resigned from a media outfit in 2008 and currently "not connected with any media group." Another consideration he mentioned is that the possible motives that the police are currently investigating "have no indications that the case is media related." Last week, the police invited a possible suspect, who voluntarily submitted himself for a paraffin test. The test reportedly yielded negative results prompting investigators to consider other angles. Daguio was shot dead by an unidentified perpetrator last Saturday, July 3, at around 8 PM at their home in Tuga, Tabuk, Kalinga. According to Joseph Daguio, his father was feeding the dogs at their backyard when he heard a gunshot. He said he heard his father calling for help whom he later found slumped at their kitchen bleeding and barely breathing. Daguio was declared dead on arrival at the Kalinga Provincial Hospital. Daguio was one of the pioneer media people in Kalinga. His work as a media practitioner included being a radio anchor and commentator at DZRK, Radyo ng Bayan and part time columnist for the Kalinga Highland Leader in the early 80's and the weekly local paper GURU Press. His last stint with a media outfit was with Radyo Natin FM Kalinga where he worked as an announcer and DJ for only three months in 2008. Speaking for the Kalinga Media Club (KaMEC), Vice President and Radyo Natin FM Station Manager Carousel ViteƱo said that media related or not, the group is condemning the dastardly act and called on the police to expedite the investigation of the Daguio case. Daguio was survived by his wife Shirley, two sons and daughter. (gdumallig/PIA-Kalinga) |
